Day trips from Tokyo
 
Kamakura
Kamakura is a pleasant seaside Japanese city just an hour south of Tokyo, it was the country’s capital for several centuries, predating the more famous Kyoto. Modern-day Kamakura is a prominent resort town with dozens of Buddhist Zen temples and Shinto shrines, including the biggest Buddha statue in Japan. Yuigahama Beach on Sagami Bay is a popular surfing spot.
 
Nikko
Nikko is a small city in Japan’s Tochigi Prefecture, in the mountains north of Tokyo. Famous for its World Heritage sites (Toshogu Shrine and others) as well as Lake Chuzenji and the Kegon Fall. Easily reached from Tokyo, Nikko is the ideal one day trip to escape the hustle and bustle of the capital, meet some native monkeys, and experience some ancient Japanese bling.
 
Mount Fuji and Five Lakes area
The symbol of Japan, massive Mount Fuji is a dormant volcano. At the northern foot of Mount Fuji are five large lakes, called Yamanakako, Saiko, Shojiko, Motosuko and Kawaguchiko. Another perfect one day nature excursion from Tokyo.
 
2-day trips from Tokyo
 
Hakone
Hakone, west of Tokyo, is a mountainous town known for its hot springs resorts (onsen) and (weather permitting) views of the iconic volcano Mount Fuji. Picturesque Lake Ashi, which can be toured by boat, and the boiling sulphur springs of the Owakudani Valley are its main attractions, as well as the longevity-enhancing black eggs boiled in the geothermal waters at Owakudani. 
 
Kusatsu Onsen
Kusatsu Onsen is a hot spring resort located in Gunma Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo. Its many public baths are very popular and the village center has a pleasant atmosphere.
 
Takayama area
Takayama is located in Japan's mountainous Gifu Prefecture. The narrow streets of its Sanmachi Suji historic district are lined with wooden merchants’ houses dating to the Edo Period, along with many small museums. Amongst other sights, the area is known for its historic village of Shirakawa-go, another of Japan’s numerous UNESCO world heritage site.
 
Kanazawa
Kanazawa (in central Japan) is known for its well-preserved Edo-era districts, art museums and regional handicrafts. Kenrokuen Garden is one of Japan’s most beautiful garden, known all over the world. Kanazawa Castle (built in the 1580s) is also worth a visit.
 
3-day trip from Tokyo

Takayama-Kanazawa
Three days would allow you to stay in Takayama and explore the whole area at leisure. See respective description above for reference.
 
Hakone-Kyoto (day 1 Hakone, 2 and 3 Kyoto)
After staying overnight in Hakone, take the bullet train to beautiful Kyoto and explore the cultural capital of Japan. Temples, Shrines, picturesque narrow streets, traditional and modern atmosphere, Kyoto has it all.
 
Kyoto-Nara-Osaka
Based yourself in Kyoto and easily explore Nara and Osaka for a taste of both ancient and modern Japan. Enjoy the Deer Park and Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara; Osaka Castle, Shinsaibashi and Dotomburi area in Osaka.
 
Hiroshima-Kyoto (Hiroshima day 1, Kyoto 2 and 3)
Take the bullet train all the way south-east to Hiroshima and visit the Atomic Dome, the Peace Park and its Museum. You will then spend 2 days in Kyoto, the cultural capital of Japan. 
 
4-day trip from Tokyo

Hakone-Kyoto (Hakone 1 night, Kyoto 2 nights)
Spend one night in beautiful Hakone then head to Kyoto for the remaining three days. You will have time to visit the cultural capital of Japan and its surroundings, Nara and Osaka.
 
Takayama-Kyoto (Takayama day 1, Kyoto 2, 3, and 4)
Another combination that will allow you to explore the mountainous Takayama area then spend 3 days in Kyoto.
 
Hiroshima-Kurashiki-Kyoto (Hiroshima day 1, Kurashiki day 2, Kyoto 3 and 4)
Visit Hiroshima and nearby Miyakejima Island, then head to picturesque Kurashiki the next day. Enjoy its canal and centuries old buildings in the Bikan area. End your stay by staying 2 days in Kyoto. 
 
Hokkaido
Japan’s northern big island is well known for its outstanding outdoor opportunities and great food, particularly sea food. Visit the city of Otaru, Sapporo or the famous Shiretoko National Park.
